India experienced its hottest year on record in 2024, according to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). 2024 was the hottest year on record since 1901, surpassing 2016’s record of 0.54°C above normal.

The average minimum temperature in 2024 for India rose to 0.90°C above the long-term average. The annual mean temperature this year in the country was 25.75°C, 0.65°C above normal, the IMD announced on the first day of the new year.

The average maximum temperature stood at 31.25°C, 0.20°C above normal. The average minimum temperature recorded by IMD this year was 20.24 degrees Celsius, 0.90 degrees Celsius above normal, according to IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra.

July, August, September, and October saw the highest recorded temperatures for these months.

Globally, 2024 likely became the warmest year ever, according to the European climate agency Copernicus. For the first time, global temperatures exceeded 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

A recent report by World Weather Attribution and Climate Central found that 2024 added 41 extra days of dangerous heat worldwide and that climate change intensified 26 out of 29 weather disasters studied, causing over 3,700 deaths and displacing millions. Experts warn the world is entering a phase of sustained warming beyond the 1.5°C threshold, driven by greenhouse gas accumulation.

In 2024, Christian Aid reports Europe faced three of 2024’s costliest climate disasters. The analysis found out that the 2024 climate disasters caused $229 billion in damages and 2,000 deaths worldwide.

António Guterres, WMO Secretary-General, in his recent New Year message officially confirmed that climate crisis has resulted in unprecedented rise in global average temperatures, “I can officially report that we have just endured a decade of deadly heat. The top 10 hottest years on record have happened in the last 10 years, including 2024.”

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) reported record rainfall, disaster floods, and extreme heatwaves in the year 2024.

Met Office predicts 2025 to be another warm year on record following 2023 and 2024’s heat measures.
