AI and digital technologies can help mitigate and adapt to climate change. They aid in energy efficiency and help reduce emissions.

These modern Technologies are important in climate monitoring, early warning systems, and adaptation efforts.

The COP29 Declaration on Green Digital Action pledges to use these tools in climate change action while reducing the environmental impact of tech manufacturing and e-waste.

COP29 in Baku Azerbaijan hosted its first Digitalisation Day. It focused on the role of technology in climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts worldwide. Over 1,000 stakeholders endorsed the Declaration on Green Digital Action.

The Declaration was presented at the High-Level Roundtable of the COP29 Digitalisation Day which the summit’s Presidency hosted with support from the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

The common objectives of the COP29 Declaration on Green Digital Action are:

  1. Leveraging Digital Technologies and Tools for Climate Action
  2. Building Resilient Digital Infrastructure
  3. Mitigating Digitalisation’s Climate Impact
  4. Promoting Digital Inclusion and Literacy
  5. Data-driven Decision-making
  6. Fostering Sustainable Innovation
  7. Encouraging Sustainable Consumer Practices
  8. Facilitating the Sharing of Best Practices

“This milestone moment for Green Digital Action at COP29 should propel us forward with the shared belief that we can and must reduce the environmental footprint of digital technologies while leveraging their undeniable potential to tackle the climate crisis,”

said ITU Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin in a press release.

Growing digitization increases energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, and e-waste. Digital technologies, including AI, require significant energy and water supply. Data centers are required to run 24/7 for uninterrupted monitoring and data processing. This consumes high amounts of electricity and needs additional power for cooling these centers.
