All About UNCCD COP 16 in Riyadh: Tackling Earth’s Desertification Crisis

The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) 16th session is schedule to take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia from December 2, 2024. 

Agreed at the 1992's Earth Summit and established in 1994, the convention brings "member states, environmental organizations, and stakeholders" together "to discuss global efforts to combat desertification, land degradation."

This year's summit is the 30th anniversary of the Convention and will be held from 2 to 13 December in the West Arabian region that has suffered land degradation, desertification and drought conditions.

"Our Land and Our Future", this the theme of UNCCD COP16 theme. COP16 is set to introduce a Negotiation Track and an Action Agenda to combat desertification at the global level.

According to the UN, the dual approach will help world nations to achieve the targets of the Convention. Action Agenda will focus on voluntary actions and commitments from members.

Meanwhile, the Negotiation Track will focus on COP decisions and political commitments and agreements between nations in enhancing global land and drought resilience and land restoration efforts.

In short, Riyadh will host delegates from 197 Parties to the Convention at the UNCCD COP16 to address the global issue of land degradation, droughts, and desertification.
