Who’s to Blame for Climate Change? ICJ Tackles the Big Question

By Javed Baloch Dated 15/12/2024

Historic Case - Climate change crisis

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) held hearings to address legal responsibility for climate change. Over 100 countries presented arguments, led by Vanuatu and Pacific island nations.

“The outcome of these proceedings will reverberate across generations, determining the fate of nations like mine and the future of our planet,” said Ralph Regenvanu, Vanuatu’s special envoy for climate change.

Key Questions Before the International court of justice

“What are countries obliged to do under international law to protect the climate and environment from human-caused greenhouse gas emissions?” "What are the legal consequences for governments when their acts, or lack of action, have significantly harmed the climate and environment?”

Divided Arguments

Developing nations urged accountability. Major polluters, including the U.S., China, and Saudi Arabia, argued against legal liability.

COP29 Frustration

Rich countries pledged $300 billion annually to help poorer nations combat climate change by 2035. However, there is a need of climate finance in trillions of dollars to combat climate change crisis. Poorer economies call this fund a joke.
