Fossil fuel pollution is a major driver of climate change, and coal energy production causes significant damage to the climate.
Despite its negative impact on the global climate, countries continue to burn coal for energy production.
According to the Urgewald Global Coal Exit List database, coal-fired power plants currently produce 2,126 gigawatts worldwide.
This production level is 11% higher than in 2015, when the Paris Agreement was signed to limit global temperature increases to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.
"Nine years after the Paris Agreement was signed, the production of thermal coal has reached a new high and the global coal-fired power plant fleet is still growing," German environmental organization Urgewald Managing Director Heffa Schücking said in a press release.
At COP28, over 130 countries agreed to transition away from coal-fired power generation. However, concrete implementation remains limited.
