The plant is expected to produce 400 megawatts, enough to power 150,000 homes. CFS CEO Bob Mumgaard called it “the first time fusion power will be made available in the world at grid scale.”

Nuclear fusion has long been viewed as the ultimate clean energy source. Fusion uses hydrogen to produce energy by fusing atoms together. It’s a clean energy process, and produces no long-term nuclear waste, according to science.

Fusion technology is still unproven for commercial use. “Nothing occurs overnight in fusion,” Mumgaard said. Permits and a lengthy construction process remain hurdles.
